B.J. Fletcher: Private Eye - The Web Series

In 2008, the world’s biggest lesbian and bisexual women’s website, AfterEllen.com, ran a competition to find the next big lesbian webseries. We produced three episodes of B.J. Fletcher: Private Eye and entered the series into the competition.

And won.

Working it…

B.J. Fletcher: Private Eye follows the adventures of intrepid private investigator B.J. Fletcher and her sidekick, best friend, one-time bartender and journalism student, Georgia Drew.

The show was filmed on location in and around Toronto, Canada. With a cast lead by Lindy Zucker and Dana Puddicombe, the writing and directing talents of Regan Latimer were showcased in weekly episodes packed with action, comedy and some great one liners. Each episode was shown on AfterEllen.com and the fan base grew from its legion of readers. So successful was the first season for AfterEllen.com that a second season was commissioned.

After Season 1 concluded, a fundraiser was held to raise money for Season 2. The website was re-developed and a merchandise store was created and added. The popular theme tune was made available as a mobile phone ringtone for download.

B.J. Fletcher: Private Eye garnered much media coverage, including write-ups in Tilzy.tv, CherryGrrl, Eurout, Curve and Tubefilter, as well as making the front page of Toronto newspaper, Xtra!

The Result

B.J. Fletcher: Private Eye has received over half a million views and the website continues to be discovered by new fans each week.

After two seasons, we became the first lesbian web series to land a television development deal. In July 2009, we signed a development deal with Matter of Fact media to develop a television broadcast proposal, including a new pilot script. Our proposal is currently being shopped to networks in the US and Canada.
